Immigrant protesters rally for equality

Disappointment with proposed anti-immigrant legislation in the General Assembly inspired more than 70 people to protest Saturday in Monroe Park. Speeches were followed by a march to Capitol Square, where protesters rallied for about an hour. The protest, organized by Mexicanos Sin Fronteras (Mexicans Without Borders), brought together immigrant families, students, workers and supporters united by the idea of equality and justice for all humans regardless of their origin.

Bill defining 'birth control' struck down

A proposal claiming birth control is not a form of abortion was defeated Tuesday in the House of Delegates Health, Welfare and Institutions Committee. Delegate Kristen Amundson, D-Mount Vernon ,sponsored the bill. "There seems to be no shortage of ideas on how to restrict a woman's reproductive rights," Amundson said at a recent press conference.

Illegal drug tax goes up in smoke

Virginia will not join more than 20 other states in taxing illegal drugs. A House finance subcommittee killed House bill 2754, which proposed the tax commissioner levy tax stamps for Schedule I or II controlled substances (such as cocaine or LSD), marijuana and illegally manufactured alcohol.

WORLD BAGHDAD, Iraq - The four U.S. helicopters that have crashed in Iraq since Jan. 20 were apparently shot down, the chief American military spokesman said Sunday. This was the first time the U.S. command has publicly acknowledged that the aircraft were lost to enemy fire.

From Thursday, Feb. 1: In the Sports section, the box score for VCU vs. Hofstra was incorrect. The score was Hofstra 79, VCU 68.
