One week after Ernesto, safety fair promotes individual preparedness

Governor Tim Kaine on Friday addressed at the Commons Plaza what has occupied many Virginians' minds since tropical depression Ernesto: safety and emergency preparedness. As part of the Interactive Safety and Preparedness Fair, which VCU and the Virginia Department of Emergency Management sponsored, the governor's keynote speech stressed the importance of preparedness at the individual level.

Rescue K-9, volunteer a crowd-pleaser

Gov. Tim Kaine may have pulled the applause at Friday's Interactive Safety and Preparedness Fair, but Duke got more pats on the head. A 7-year-old German Shepherd, Duke works with his owner and trainer John Suitt to find missing persons. Suitt, a volunteer with K-9 Alert Search and Rescue Dogs, Inc.

New Web site offers improved navigation, features

It has taken eight months to develop. It features scrolling new photographs fading in and out every seven seconds and a sleek modern typeface. The new VCU Web site tonight at 6 will replace the current 2-year-old one. "It's more intuitive," said Sue Ann Messmer, chief of staff of the President's office and vice president for external relations.

New journal highlights international genocide research

He has answered over 900 e-mails. He has exchanged letters with a German scholar with no Internet access. He has read it cover to cover. Now, there is finally a stack of the new journal of Genocide Studies and Prevention on Herbert Hirsch's desk. Hirsch is managing co-editor of the newly created international journal.

'Survivor' gets controversial

This Thursday, CBS will begin the search for its sole survivor. But this time producers didn't mix and match possible team combinations using differences in personality traits, strengths and weaknesses or abilities of the cast; this season's teams were determined by each tribal members' skin color and ethnic background.

Starbucks coffee on international art tour

Starbucks brought its latest project, a hybrid of coffee and art, to the residents of New York City on Friday. The temporary performance coffee house will run Sept. 8 to 17, providing 10 days of live music, spoken word, poetry readings and fashion presentations.
